SU Women Take on Yale and Cornell - Saturday, April 2

Thanks to the Daily Orange for this piece:

Chelsea Macpherson has taken to heart her head coach's nutty message. And with a meet against the nation's No. 6 team on deck, Macpherson and the rest of the Syracuse women's rowing team are hoping to channel SU head coach Justin Moore's loony rhetoric into a upset of No. 6 Yale.

Macpherson says Moore emphasizes that when rowing, a group must be collectively crazy in order to win. It's been one of his main mantras in his first year as head coach and has steered the Orange in meets. This weekend, SU's meet contains top-notch competition by way of Yale and Cornell rowing in the same field as SU.

Based off last season's results, SU will need to heed the advice of Moore now more than ever. In 2010, Yale and Cornell coasted to victories over SU by more than 15 seconds.

If there is ever a time to be a little loony, this weekend in Derby, Conn., is it.

"You have to go crazy to be in the field," Macpherson said.

The weekend in Connecticut provides SU with a rare opportunity: a matchup with the defending national champions. And no matter the outcome, it's an opportunity to relish.

But Moore's "crazy" mantra has yielded brash confidence for the Orange. SU is convinced Yale will have to look over their collective shoulder mid-race. Syracuse has the utmost confidence it will compete.

"I think they'll be very surprised halfway down the race course when we're still next to them, because we will be," junior Allison Todd said. "We're going to be all over them."

Syracuse is coming off a performance last week against Boston University when the third varsity eight won its race. The team as a whole made great strides, Moore said. Against elite competition, the team is excited to see how it stacks up, in preparation for upcoming meets and the Big East championships.

And the optimism goes back to the cocksure theme the first year coach preaches: constant improvement and increased confidence. Moore took over the program this past summer, and although the program experienced difficulties in the fall campaign, the team has seen results in Moore's system, Todd said. Results that Todd hopes will show this week.

"We've come so far as a team in eight months," Todd said. "We're faster, stronger, more fit. We're all excited to go."

The team did not perform well against Yale and Cornell last year, with the first, second and third varsity eights all finishing third behind Yale and Cornell. In the first varsity eight, Yale finished with a time of 6:27.4, while Syracuse clocked in at 6:46.2.

Last year's race posed tough elements to which the team did not adequately respond.

"The team didn't handle the conditions or the pressure," Moore said.

And against a crew with the caliber of Yale, there is little margin for error.

The Orange is very young, with 22 members either freshmen or sophomores. Just like with any young team, there comes the potential for improvement. With that, Moore feels that tangible development is necessary in the upcoming meets as a result.

"Because the crew is so young, we need to continue to build," Moore said. "We need to execute our strategy."

Despite the long odds and green makeup of the team, SU maintains winning is not out of the question. But the Orange knows it is important to not get discouraged about the final result.

For now, the team is on board with Moore's "crazy" philosophy. And with it, simply getting better each team they get in the water.

Still, the race poses opportunity. Competing against Yale will serve as a benchmark, a way of seeing how much training efforts over the last eight months have paid off. And as long as the team recognizes the quality of the opponent, the race should only help the team in the long run.

From its head coach all the way through the entire squad, as a collective SU might just be crazy enough to pull off the upset.

"When you're going to go out and race with the national champions, it tells you how close you're going to be," Macpherson said. "There's nothing to lose in this race."

Terriers take SU in Varsity and 2V; 3V gets a win in Boston.

It was a tough morning for the SU women’s team on the Charles River in its opening races for Coach Justin Moore. The Boston University Terriers took back the Kittle Cup with a wire-to-wire win over the Orange varsity eight. The Terriers grabbed a couple of seats off the start and built to nearly a length lead at the halfway point.

The Orange never let the Terriers get away, pushing back to close to less than a length at the finish but did not have enough to overtake BU.

The racing conditions included 30 degree temperatures and a head wind of 10-15 knots in the second half of the race course.

In the 2V race SU got off to an early lead but the Terriers caught up around the first 500 meters and made a move to open half a length near the halfway point. With 500 to go, BU made it a length and added a length of open water down the stretch to win it going away.

The Orange 3V got a win to begin the day, beating BU across the line by open water.

Syracuse’s Varsity Four was second to BU’s “A” four but defeated the Terriers’ “B” boat.

Men Elect Captains

Over the Spring Training Trip in Clemson, South Carolina the Men's team thought long and hard about who to choose as a Captain, or in this case Captains, to lead the team through the Spring Season.

Congratulations to senior members Vince Berry and Mike Gennaro, Captain's of the Syracuse Men's Team for the 2011 Season. Both Mike and Vince have been members of the Varsity 8 since their sophomoreyear and together this fall dominated, and successfully navigated, a chaotic field of small boats in the Men's Pair at the Princeton Chase after winning the race 4+ earlier in the day.

We look forward to having them lead our team into some great racing this spring.

Spring Training Trip Blog Post

courtesy of SU Athletics:
posting from Miranda Williams

The spring training trip this year began with a 13 hour bus ride to get to our destination, Clemson, South Carolina. Feeling excited to see some more of the states, and pumped for a week of rowing, we set off from a cold Syracuse during the night. By the time we woke the sun was shining and we were seeing a southern landscape! With a few stops along the way, we were able to have a chat with some locals and loved hearing their real southern accents!

Once we arrived, we settled into our rooms and headed down to the training site, which is beautiful! With the sun shining on huge stretch of water, surrounded by trees and amongst some of our competition, the atmosphere felt competitive and exciting. We rigged the boats we hadn’t seen since Florida, and as freshman learnt some new tricks to the trade from upperclassmen and coaches, then we finally got our boats on the water. Although it was a little wavy, and we were feeling pretty tired, it felt awesome getting back into boats.

After the row we got to eat at Clemson dining hall, and see some of their campus, and views of the pretty town. It was great seeing another college campus, and experiencing again a different American culture to the northeast. After dinner we returned to our hotel for a team meeting. We spoke about the week, and as always Justin inspired and excited us, not only for this week but also for the upcoming season. I can’t wait to see how this week goes, and am so excited for the racing to begin!

Syracuse to Host 2011 USRowing Women's National Team Pre-Elite Camp

story courtesy of SU Athletics

SYRACUSE – Syracuse University will play host to the 2011 USRowing Women's National Team Pre-Elite Camp from June 12-July 12 and will conclude at Club Nationals in Indianapolis, Ind. July 12-17. SU head women’s rowing coach Justin Moore will run the camp. Participants in the camp will have the opportunity to use SU's boathouse, tanks, ergs and weight room.

“I am very excited to have this opportunity to continue to contribute to the development of Olympic athletes for USRowing,” Moore said. “I am also extremely excited that the outstanding water and facilities at Syracuse University has been made available to these athletes in their quest for Olympic dreams.”

The Women’s National Team Pre-Elite Camp develops athletes for the U23 and Senior National Teams. The goal of this camp is to teach skills necessary to compete at the elite level by focusing on small boats, introducing and developing sculling, gaining fitness and increasing strength to weight ratio. Athletes train intensely with 2-3 practices per day. They row primarily in small boats and/or scull, and they have opportunities to race throughout the summer.

The application deadline for the Pre-Elite Camp is Sunday, March 15, 2011. Please note, you must have an USRowing membership that is good through July 2011.

Applicants should be 5-feet-11-inches or taller. Shorter candidates may be considered depending on demonstrated erg scores and team rank. The erg score range should be below 7:10 (2k) and 23:00 (6k). Athletes who apply but are not accepted to the U23 Camp may be encouraged to attend this camp instead.

Depending on the depth of the applicant pool, 10-16 rowers and 1-2 coxswains will be selected for this camp.

The estimated cost of the camp is $1500. Payment information will be sent out with acceptances. The cost of the camp includes: all coaching, equipment, facility fees, and hotel at Club Nationals. Housing in Syracuse will be in host homes, so athletes will have access to kitchens. Food and transportation are not included. Those athletes who bring a car to the camp will get a discount on the camp fee as well as reimbursement for driving expenses. Transportation to regattas and other training sites will be coordinated amongst invited athletes prior to the camp.
